Recap from last week’s games featuring several Bay Oaks alums competing against each other at the college level In a match featuring three EBU Bay Oaks 93 alums, Santa Clara took down University of the Pacific with a 4-1 victory. Impressively, all three of the alums contributed to goals during the match. Dylan Autran picked up the assist on Max Ornstil’s goal for the Broncos. Notching Pacific’s lone goal was Julio Cervantes. Both teams have four games remaining in West Coast Conference play, with Santa Clara currently sitting in third place. In attendance at the match to cheer on his former Bay Oaks teammates was Francisco Mendoza, who is leading the way at Merritt College as the team aims for a playoff spot in the Bay Valley Conference .
Also suiting up for Santa Clara this year is freshman Babacar Diallo, who had a nice feature about his transition to college soccer posted on the website last week. Down in Southern California, two EBU Bay Oaks 92 alums faced off against one another, when Max Oldham and the Cal Bears took on John Marcuzzo and the San Diego State Aztecs. The Bears prevailed with a 2-1 victory and the former teammates enjoyed a reunion after the match.

October 28th, 2014 report on postseason playThe regular season is winding down and that means conference races are heating up. We are tracking Bay Oaks alums as they look to qualify for post-season play.
DIVISION I MEN’S SOCCER Big West Conference Noah Gaines and UC Irvine sit at #14 in the NSCAA rankings, down from #4 the week before, after dropping two Big West matches last week. The Anteaters are 11-3-2 overall, but just 3-3-1 in conference play, with three matches left in the regular season. They’ll need a strong finish over that three game stretch to qualify for the Big West conference tournament. Gaines is a starter on the squad and a key player on the back line. Meanwhile in the Northern Division of the Big West, freshman Matt Baringer and UC Davis are at the top of the standings with three games to go. West Coast Conference Three Bay Oaks alums are on the roster at Santa Clara, with juniors Max Ornstil and Dylan Autran entrenched as starters on the squad. Babacar Diallo is earning his stripes as a freshman, seeing the field in a couple of games this season. The West Coast Conference doesn’t hold a conference tournament, so the remaining two and a half weeks of the season will include 5 regular season matches and the conference standings have a long way to go until they take their final shape. Currently the Broncos are tied with 4 other teams holding a 1-1 record, while two teams sit undefeated at 2-0. Pac12 Conference Cal enjoyed a bye week to rest and recharge heading into the stretch run of Pac12 play. Without a conference tournament, the regular season results will crown the conference champion. Currently, the Bears and senior Max Oldham are 8-3-1 overall and in 4th place with a 2-2-1 conference record. The University of Washington sits in second place in the Pac12, with an 11-3-1 overall record and 4-2-1 record in conference play. Charlie Ranahan is a senior for the Huskies and looks to take his team far in his last collegiate campaign.
DIVISION III MEN’S SOCCER Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coby Sippel and Carleton College take on their biggest rival, St. Olaf, this weekend. The match also brings together the current first and second place teams in the MIAC. A win would secure 2nd place for Carleton (they cannot catch St. Olaf in the standings) and give them a first round bye in the conference tournament. Centennial Conference Swarthmore College and Dayo Origunwa have a lot at stake when they take on archrival Haverford on Saturday. Only a win and some help will get the Garnet’s into postseason play for the Centennial Conference tournament.
DIVISION I WOMEN’S SOCCER Ivy League Three Bay Oaks alums suit up as freshman for Yale in the Ivy League. Carlin Hudson has started all season as a defender, with Mara Blumenstein and Taylor Hobbs logging some freshman minutes here and there. Yale has just one loss after the first five conference matches, but along with three ties, the 1-1-3 record puts them in 5th place. With two games remaining (and no conference tournament), the Bulldogs are in striking distance of 3rd place if they can finish strong. Pac12 conference In the incredibly tough Pac12, the top five or six teams usually make the NCAA tournament. With three games remaining in the regular season (and no conference tournament), Stanford and University of Washington are looking good, but Cal needs to finish strongly to earn a spot on the national stage. Junior Celeste Martore plays midfield and forward for the Cal Bears, who are 11-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play, good for 6th place currently. Stanford is 14-1-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the Pac12 and ranked #4 in the country. Ryan Walker-Hartshorn has been outstanding, leading the team with 8 goals so far the season. Tied for third in the Pac12 is the University of Washington, where twin sisters Chelsea and Christina Archer are both key players in a squad that is 12-4-1 overall and ranked #17 in the country. Big West Bianca Lowe, Justine Silvers and Cal State Northridge can clinch a spot in the Big West tournament with a win in the final game of the regular season, where they will face Ryan Daniel and the University of Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine have already been mathematically eliminated from the postseason, but they look to play spoilers this weekend. Big Sky Conference Portland State is looking good for a second place finish in the Big Sky Conference, which would earn them a first-round bye in the tournament. Bay Oaks alums playing for the Vikings are Bianca Munoz and Kristin Moyer. Patriot League Katherine Lim is a senior starting defender on a Boston University team that currently holds the nation’s longest DI active unbeaten streak for home matches—a streak of 30 games at home without a loss! The Terriers are 11-4-3 overall and in second place with a 5-1-2 record in the Patriot League. A win in their final game, combined with a loss by Colgate, would give them the regular season championship and #1 seed for the tournament. DIVISION II WOMEN’S SOCCER California Collegiate Athletic Association The CCAA tournament will start on Sunday, November 2nd, but postseason spots are still up for grabs. The regular season concludes on Thursday, October 30th and several key matches remain on the slate to determine the top-six teams who will qualify for the tournament. After sprinting out to a 10-0 start, Sonoma State has hit some speed bumps and now find themselves fighting to get into the CCAA tournament. The Seawolves are 13-4 overall and 6-4 in CCAA play, which puts them in 5th place with one game remaining in the regular season. A win secures them a spot in postseason play and a group of Bay Oaks alums will do their part in reaching that goal. Alex Sifuentes has 4 goals and an assist on the year, while twin sister Cecilia has started all 17 games on defense this season. Alex Arandia also plays for the Seawolves and Kesy Platt is taking a red-shirt year. Reyna Buzon and the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors are also fighting for their playoff lives, but they will need some assistance. A win or tie in their final game is needed, plus some help from other squads to get that #6 spot in the tournament. Darby Nordin is a sophomore for Chico State, who has already qualified for one of the spots in the CCAA tournament. The Wildcats are 10-4-2 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play, good for 2nd place heading into the final game of the regular season on Thursday.
DIVISION III WOMEN’S SOCCER Liberty League Rory Chipman and Vassar College control their own fate in the Liberty League. With a win in their final regular season game on Saturday, they can earn a trip to the postseason (and a match against defending NCAA DIII Champion, William Smith).
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Aminah Luqman has been out this season with a knee injury, but Pomona-Pitzer is poised to earn a spot in the SCIAC tournament. Currently tied for third place, they need a point out of their next two games to clinch a berth and can move as high as first place with two wins and some help. Also looking to grab a spot in the SCIAC tournament, and her first taste of postseason play, is senior Abigail Mitchell at Occidental College. Occidental is tied with Pomona-Pitzer in third place and also needs just one point to guarantee itself a spot in the tournament field.
North Coast Athletic Conference Gen Eng-Surowiec and Denison University have clinched a spot in the NCAC tournament. With one game remaining in the regular season, they stand in third place with a 12-5 overall record and 5-2 in conference play. Gen is a senior defender who has started all 17 games for the Big Red.
NAIA Women’s Soccer Cascade Conference Kylie Moltzen and the Southern Oregon Raiders enter the Cascade Conference tournament as the #6 seed. Moltzen plays goalkeeper for the Raiders and will need to be at the top of her game if SOU is to make a run through the tournament, as the top seeds include some of the best NAIA teams in the country. |
October 20th, 2014 reportAlex Sifuentes scored her fourth goal of the year, and it was the game-winner in Sonoma State’s 1-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Twin sister Cecilia Sifuentes also continues to shine, starting all 15 games for the Seawolves as a freshman defender and playing a big part in the team’s impressive 0.71 Goals-Against-Average.
Max Oldham was once again involved in an important goal for Cal. He had the assist on the Bear’s goal that earned his team a crucial Pac-12 point with a 1-1 tie against Stanford. Oldham has started all 12 games for the Bears, in which he has contributed 2 goals and 6 assists.
Drew Ranahan was honored by both teams in the senior day match for Virginia Tech. After losing his senior season due to an injury, the coaches from Pitt and Virginia Tech found a special way to pay respect to the captain. Drew got his first start of the season, allowing the crowd to clap him off the field with an early substitution. The match ended in a 0-0 draw.
Chelsea Archer picked up an assist in University of Washington’s 3-0 win against Oregon State. Washington moved up to #11 in the NSCAA rankings and sits in third place in the Pac-12 with a 4-2 conference record and an 11-4 overall record. Twin sister Christina Archer has also been a major contributor to the team’s success, starting all 15 games for the Huskies. |
October 13th, 2014 report
Kylie Moltzen continues to split time in the net as a goalkeeper for Southern Oregon. The Raiders had a good week, earning a win against Eastern Oregon and a tie against the College of Idaho. The results moved them up to the middle of the pack in the Cascade Collegiate Conference with three games left to play in the regular season.
Bianca Munoz has worked her way into the starting line up at Portland State. She was a big part of the team’s weekend, where they earned two important victories in Big Sky play. Munoz had the assist in a 1-0 win at Idaho State, serving up the corner kick that was headed in for the game-winner. Portland State also had a 1-0 win over Weber State and moved into contention in the Big Sky conference.

In a huge win for the Cal Bears, senior Max Oldham contributed an assist in overtime for a 3-2 win against the #2 ranked UCLA Bruins. The Bears also picked up a win against San Diego State, moving back into the thick of the Pac-12 race. Go here to see a video highlight of the game-winning goal (Max has the little touch that plays-in the goal-scorer).

October 7th, 2014 report
Carlin Hudson was named Rookie of the Week in the Ivy League, after an outstanding game shutting down Harvard’s potent attack in a 0-0 draw for Yale.
Also pulling in Player of the Week honors was Ryan Walker-Hartshorn, who earned the award for top attacking player in the Pac-10 last week. Ryan got the nod after tallying her second hat-trick of the season, this time against the University of Washington in a 4-1 win for the Stanford Cardinals.

Twin sisters Alexandra and Cecilia Sifuentes have helped Sonoma State get off to an outstanding start on the 2014 season.
