Classes & Clinics
[Updated 25 August 14]
Referees are a critical part of an organized soccer experience. Every referee in our league - from experts to beginners - comes from the ranks of parents and players.
Team Requirements
The Jack London YSL referee requirements for each team are listed here. Every team should have at least one affiliated referee at the beginning of each season (Spring and Fall).
EBU recommends that each ref should work 10-15 games per season in order to gain in skill. Our rule of thumb is that the team refs should advance in experience at the same rate as your team.
Beginning Fall 2014, EBU has instituted the following additional rules for its teams:
- Teams that do not have an affiliated ref will not be allowed to schedule home games
- Teams that have unpaid referee credit fines from previous seasons will lose practice days during the week
Entry Level Courses
To train new referees for your team, soccer clubs sponsor courses sanctioned by FIFA, US Soccer, and the Cal North Referee Association.

In-service Clinics for Current Refs
Jack London is sponsoring two clinics for ongoing training for current refs. Other in-service sessions are in planning.
EBU highly recommends that refs of all experience levels attend a session. (We can all use a refresher, and we can each always learn something new.)
Topics include:
- All roles: Fitness overview for different match levels
- AR role: Positioning, Movement and Signaling

Mentored Training Games for New or Recent Refs
Jack London is reserving games for new or recent refs to get on-field feedback from experienced ref mentors. Referees are constantly learning new things in every game. This is a safe, efficient, and extremely useful way to work on your technique, observation, and personal reffing style.
For Fall 2014:
- First training weekend will be Sept 6-7
- Watch this space and communication from the club Ref Coordinators for more info on how to request these games.
