NEW – REDESIGNED WINTER FINISHING PROGRAM

FOR AGES 05-03

As one of the greatest professional goal scorers of all time once said, “you miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take” (Wayne Gretzky). We want our players to take more shots, to take more risks, and to have the abilities and confidence to have more success.

The program is led by an attacking ex-professional soccer player, Mason Webb (Vancouver Whitecaps) who is passionate about sharing his knowledge of finishing, “I want to see our youth players having more moments to celebrate and this is why I’ve spent hours revamping and redesigning the Finishing program so that they have access to what I believe are the most important tools for scoring goals. Below are a list of what I’ve come up with.”

  • The Fundamentals of Shooting – Technical Skills

  • Understanding Frequent Goal Scoring Scenarios in a Game – Tactical Knowledge

  • Improvisation and Creativity Through Unstructured Games – Developing a Unique Attacking Personality

  • Taking thousands of shots in the correct way – Successful Repetition

  • The Psychology of Scoring – Finishing Mentality

What can you expect on a regular Winter Finishing Program Day?

Dynamic Warmup – The players will arrive at the field and complete a dynamic warm-up led by Mason and his staff.  After the warmup, they’ll split up into 3 groups (determined by age/skill level) and start at one of 3 stations. Each station will have a unique finishing objective that’s related to the list above and the coach in that station will be working on delivering 2 main focuses.

Scenario Station – The S station is designed to recreate a game like environment that will be the focus for the day (for example, a breakaway against a GK).

  • Primary focus – to develop and improve a player’s technical ability and decision making in that scenario by helping them modify and correct improper technical execution and tactical choices.
  • Secondary focus – to improve a player’s confidence in that scenario by providing them with multiple opportunities of success through a no pressure to pressure progression.

Functional/Technical Station – the FT Station is designed to improve mobility and core technical components related to the scenario of the day.

  • Primary focus: Developing 2 functional areas like coordination and balance that relate to the 2 core technical components for the day.
  • Secondary focus: Introducing and improving 2 core technical components like setting up your shot, and generating more power by demonstrating proper mechanics and by giving players individual feedback while they experiment with these.

Game Station – a combination of 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 unstructured games.

  • Primary Focus – to give players an opportunity to explore creative ways of attacking, to experiment with their new skills and understanding, and to empower players to take risks so that they can cultivate a Finishing mentality.
  • Secondary Focus – to allow players to develop their own attacking personality and find new ways to celebrate scoring.

This program is a seasonal, progressive program which means that each season builds on the next and each week builds on the week before it. That being said, we highly recommend players to start at the beginning of the program each season; however, each session is designed so that players can jump in and start any time.
